What Is Civitan?

Since 1917, Civitan International has been an organization of volunteers encompassing 35 countries, with a dedication of making a difference within their communities. Civitan’s primary focus has always been to work with people that have physical and cognitive disabilities. The Civitan International Research Center (CIRC) was created in 1989 with a $20 million pledge from Civitan International. The CIRC opened in 1992. Located in Birmingham, Alabama, the CIRC has emerged as a world leader in the research and treatment of intellectual and Developmental Disabilities (I/DD).

Who are we?
We are the Newburgh adult and junior Civitan clubs located about 2 miles East of Castle High School. We have been serving the Newburgh and Evansville area since 1972, followed by starting our main event the Zombie Farm which has ran every October since 1974, and one year later in 1975 we chartered our junior club. Both clubs serve in the tri-state area with service projects, fundraisers, and by volunteering our time. We keep on with the Civitan Mission of building good citizenship by volunteering for individual and community needs with an emphasis on helping people with developmental disabilities.

Newburgh Civitan Adult Club
The adult club’s focus is supporting Special Olympics, Easterseals, and Civitan International Research Center. We participate in giveback nights, rummage sales, and other volunteer and fundraiser events. We also volunteer with local businesses, charities, and other Civitan clubs in the tri-state area with their fundraisers and events.

Newburgh Junior Civitan Club
This is where it all starts, by teaching that just because we are all different it doesn’t make us less than anyone else. We teach the importance of teamwork and offer many ways for our juniors to take on leadership and service projects in the community. Each year, the juniors dress up and scare in the haunted house as well as give guided, no-scare tours. The juniors get the opportunity to attend the Youth Leadership and Diversity Conference (YLDC) and the Junior Civitan International Convention.
